Goal A. Students will be able to compose for particular audiences and purposes
This goal states to transform information in ways that are appropriate to who is viewing it and why. I have learned multiple ways to perform this goal while in the class. The assignments that allowed me to learn this the best was learning the P.A.G.E principals and applying those in the EAR project. The P.A.G.E principals have a property for each letter in the word. P, stands for the purpose, A stands for the audience, G stands for the genre, and E stands for the engagement. The EAR project was the name of a project that we did in class that involved analyzing different genres of writing such as flyers, brochures and letters, and applying the P.A.G.E principals to them. After applying the P.A.G.E principals we then created our own versions of these documents to accustom different audiences. This helped us learn different techniques on how to write and create documents to suit a certain audience in a more precise and understanding way.
In the example of the brochure I created above, I am trying to give employers an example of documents I create can look like. Using the P.A.G.E principals on other examples I was able to see different qualities of things I liked and didn't like in other examples.
My Flyer (below) shows a final creation of an example of what a flyer would look like targeted towards students if I created it. Certain qualities I tried to keep out of my flyer such as containing to much information and have to many colors and making them seem jumbled.
These examples satisfy the goals because they show the work I created and how they would look for each audience. My brochure shows the more professional aspect and side of my design. I tried not to use crazy colors so it didn't seem to childish, and I tried to put in important information to get the main idea of the brochure across. For the flyer, I made it more appealing to the students. I tried to get organize it in a certain way and put why other students joined the business field. I put the reasons for other students joining because college students tend to be more easily influenced by their peers than other groups of people.
Goal B. Students will be able to compose using language and conventions appropriate to genre.
This goal states that we will be able to write or present using the style and rules concerning a certain form. For this goal I am going to use the Ear project again. The Ear project does a good job of showing how we learned how to create different documents to accustom different audiences. The main idea we learned how to do this was the P.A.G.E principals. I know I stated the principals in the previous goal but they do the best job of showing a strategy of how we learned to create different things to suit different audiences. I will use the example of my flyer again. The flyer is aimed towards students. Learning from other students allowed me to create a flyer that I believe will suit students and attract their attention so they will want to read and attend the event. Some of the qualities that students didn't like was when a flyer had to much information or was to plain or had to much going on in it. They preferred the flyer to be short and to the point. If the flyer was too long the students wouldn't take the time to read it, if there was too much going on the students would think its not appealing so they wouldn't want to read the information or go to the event.
Goal C. Students will be able read, select, and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments.
This goal states that students will be able to find, evaluate and use information that will help support a point. For this goal I am going to use my clue project. The Clue project was a project we did in class that required us to interview students or members of what our research question pertained to, to gather information that helped us provide evidence to answer our research question. My research question was, "Why did students choose to enter the business field." I interviewed multiple students and find a couple of different answers. The main answers were because they felt that being a business major offered better job security, better salary and that the student received personal joy and satisfaction from it. The document I will be using to showcase this is the Final essay of my Clue project. The essay shows information I received from students and from books and periodicals pertaining to why students and other people chose the business field.
When it came to the research I did, some evidence supported the claims and answers made by the students. This is an excerpt from my essay stating a piece of information that I found from researching, " Kumar found that a lot of people chose the business field and different areas of it due to job openings."
Goal D. Students will be able to interpret and compose in a variety of media and print/non-print genres.
This goal states that students will be able to analyze and write in a variety of types and styles. We learned how to write in a variety of different ways during the Ear project. We also learn the C.R.A.P principals which gave us a technique on how to analyze different pieces of work and our own to adjust to a certain genre of medium. The C.R.A.P principals stand for contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity. We used these principals as well when doing our Ear project. They gave us a great way of seeing how big of an effect that those principals can have. I never noticed how much those little differences in space and contrast can make until analyzing them close up and critiquing them. In my brochure I show I tried to use simple colors while still having the right amount of information and aligning it properly to show neatness and to make the information more appealing.
Sometimes it is the littlest of details that can cause somebody to grab your brochure or read your flyer. Most of these things are made unconsciously unless looking close at them and analyzing them. That's why it is even more important to use those principals to your advantage when making a document.
Goal E. Students will be able to discuss and apply appropriate writing processes both individually and in collaborative contexts.
This goal states that students will be able to make revisions both by themselves and with others. This means that we can give and receive critique and be able to use the information from it effectively and accordingly. We did this for each of our projects in the class. They gave us great information and an opportunity on how to learn to give and receive revisions. The reviews definitely allowed for better projects to be made by the students. I know without them I wouldn't have been able to write and create as well without the revisions because they gave me unbiased insight on what other people thought of my projects and papers.
Now I am going to show how my flyer looked before I received feedback from my peers in class. My flyer had the most distinct change in it. The flyer at first doesn't look very clean and neat. You can more or less tell that it was put together by a student for other students. There is no contrast, repetition or alignment.
Now here is the final version of my flyer. You can tell a big difference. There is alignment with the pictures and the bulleted lists. There is contrast with the colors and repetition with the use of the blue color at the top and then at the bottom of the flyer. Overall, it just looks more well put together and constructed.
All of these goals are important and can single handedly change the way people view your work. It wasn't until learning these goals and using each of them that I understood the importance of each of them. Looking at the examples and creating our own examples allowed for me to gain a better knowledge of how to use these goals in the future to make my work the best it can be. The information I learned in this class will stay with me and give me the ability to be a better student and eventually a better employee or boss. Knowing the effective ways to get your point across to somebody or an audience of people can be the difference between success and failure.
